One of the main purposes of having a company social media presence in the first place is to drive sales. You can certainly do that, just don't overdo it.

Interesting point. I feel "upgrade type" contractors (Remodeling, kitchen cabinets, flooring, etc.) do very well with social media advertising, but a contracting businesses that rely on "immediate need" services (plumbers, HVAC, appliance repair, etc.) might not get the benefit of getting to their market when they need the service using social media. Is there evidence that shows social media advertising works well for the latter type of contractors? I would be very interested in using it, if that is the case.

Its more of how people are looking up services these days. Everyone and their mom has a facebook (literally) and there are things you can do with pixels on your website, that directly relate to what advertisements a person will see on facebook. There is a lot to it, but just about every service industry benefits greatly from this, even moreso when its tied into other forms of digital marketing, Website, SEO, Etc.

I think that having social media is important for brand awareness and to help with SEO for you site, but does anyone have experience with direct results for service or install work? I am thinking of experimenting with funnels in FaceBook and just wondering if anyone has any experience/success they may share.

We are experimenting with a 3 part funnel (click, optin, close) but haven't quite finished the build out. Hopefully soon.

I think that having social media is important for brand. I also think that it is very important to choose the right media to promote the company. For example, you don't need instagram if you run a shipping company

I myself have only a website but sometimes I ask customers to recommend me to friends. There is no better advertisement than recommendations

I know that social media is good for building brand awareness. Using certain hashtags can also get the right people to see your posts. For example, #HVAC.
But how can you "target" people using social media? Is it done through boosted posts?

I’ve been an SEO & website development specialist for over 15 years. In fact, It worked so well for my hvac.r clients, I decided to start my own commercial refrigeration business in Dallas, TX. A lot has changed over the past 15 years. To be competitive online in 2020, you’ll need social media, seo, and ppc during slower months of year.

Social media is more effective for customer retention and branding (sales, installation, maintenance). SEO & PPC is best for repair services. The most important and most effective online lead generator is actually your Google maps listing.
