One reason I'll check the oil level in the pump on a regular basis. If it begins to rise, then I'll let it be until the vacuum begins to stall. When I see the pull down rate begin to slow, then I'll change the oil.
Years ago (decades actually), using a JB branded Hastings gage I often found that 2 hours of evacuation was the limit of my equipment for needing an oil change (as dictated by pull down rate slowing to below practical). When I saw the pull down rate taper off, I'd valve off and check the pump performance; the pump itself almost always couldn't pull 300 microns. Change oil, confirm pump operation and back to work. If the system was moisture contaminated, it would be another 2 hours and the oil would be fouled again

The new version has a ton of updated content written by Bryan Orr and Jim Bergmann-as additional chapters.
Sort of like the Wizard of Oz movie
The book starts in black and white then goes into full color.
The Wizards of Vacuum.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

This is one of my favorite threads here. I finally got around to making me one of these hoses.
I bought a 10-foot piece of this 3/4-inch ID vacuum hose and used 1 meter of it for my hose. For the ends, I used 2-inch pieces of 3/4-inch ACR copper tubing and caps with holes drilled in them to accept flare fittings from a 1/4-inch charging hose. I soldered the ends together with Stay-Brite 8. I would have brazed it, but the flare fittings from the charging hose are steel, and I didn't have any 45% silver brazing alloy. The Stay-Brite 8 ended up working great though. And I have enough hose left over to make two more of these.
It managed to pull a 50-pound recovery tank down to 500 microns in under 5 minutes with a 5-CFM vacuum pump and in about 8 minutes with a 2-CFM pump. I was able to pull the hose itself down to 30 microns. I'm pretty happy with it!

Been thinking about finding some spring style hose clamps like you see in automotive.

Those would be ideal.
