    Do 5 inch thick filters flow more ?

    verses a 1 inch

    So lets say you have a 20x20x1 and you install the proper filter grill to accept a 20x20x5 does it actually flow more Cfm ??

    Same merv rating? Will they be changed every month or once or twice a year?

    Yes - there's more surface area for the air to go through on the thicker filter. To be perfectly clear, both filters could theoretically have the same CFM, but at way different static pressures. The thicker filter will have higher CFM for a given static pressure drop, or lower static for the same CFM.

    I did a test of our unit at 1600 CFM. Brand new Merv 8 20x25x1 pleated had a .5" static drop

    Aprilaire 213 media Merv 13 had a .29" drop filthy and .23" drop new. Takes a lot to hurt airflow with Aprilaire medias. That 1" with a little dust on it, look out!

    Each filter has the same area L x W. The corrugations provide more surface area because they add a 3rd component - D(epth)

    It's the same amount of dust, spread over a wider area. Thus, there's more space for air to flow past it and the static pressure is lower.

    The pressure-drop of some filters is unreal; a .5" is a real killer...

    The other aspect of having a filter with a greater surface area such as the five inch thick filter that you described is that the face velocity of the filter drops, making filtration more effective and particles less likely to pass through the filtration element surface.
