Automatic Brush Cleaning Systems

What are the experiences here with automatic pipe cleaning systems with brushes for chiller condensers?

How do they compare with sponge balls, or twisted tape inserts?

They work quite well on new, clean systems as long as frequency is correct and logic for controlling sequence of either unloading or stopping the chiller during the cleaning process is set up properly.
The important thing is to ensure the Brush cleaning system is commissioned and working and the customers chemical treatment is also properly set up before you commission the chiller.
Then the brushes have a chance of keeping things clean, but if it is commissioned after the chiller is working and chemical treatment is not correct, the brushes will probably not remove any scale deposited and it becomes a waste of time. They can keep tubes clean when deposits are minimal but anything more than that and they are a waste of time.

Bad concept. Maintain water quality and proper treatment instead.

All that fancy stuff just ends up getting ripped out when they fail. Ive had bad experiences and it ends up costing the customer a lot in labor to remove it all. As stated, proper water treatment and pulling the condenser head and brushing once a year goes a long way.
