Feeling Proud of My Son Today

So a couple weeks ago my son who's in kindergarten said he wanted help with his science fair project. I asked him what he wanted to do? He told me he was interested in some sort of energy recycler. We talked about the wasted energy that goes down the drain when your taking a shower and came up with using a heat pump to recover the wasted energy.

Basically we built a display with a small wall hung sink and faucet. Water drained from the sink into a 15 gallon reservoir that we put an evaporator coil into. We harvested the parts from a cheap R410a window air conditioner, 1/2 ton. We built a small plenum in front of the condenser and attached 6" metal pipe to a supply register.

The model worked well. Even when the water temp got down to 40 degrees the discharge air temp was still above 90. Best of all I watched in the background and my kid was able to explain very well how the machine worked, and the individual components.
