It took me ten years to get in the union, I tried to get through the hall, went to many interviews with pipe fitters clueless about HVAC service then I finally realized they had no intentions to let me in so I applied directly to signatory contractors, got "white ticketed" right away, I could had been retired by now if I got in ten years ago, glad I didn't give up, for me working non-union was a waste!
There is not better place for the working men than the union! 100% UA the only HVAC union!

Most Halls are not going to consider a non-union technician to be a journeyman, because he has not gone through their program and is not recognized as an experienced technician ....even if that guy knows more than most of the journeyman who are actually out there making the rate.

Not sure I am reading it correctly but he said he was already a UA journeyman and in another union. Shouldn’t that forego an apprenticeship?

A Journeyman (Operating Engineer Union) does not necessarily equal a Journeyman (Pipe Trades Union).

Nowadays getting into the union is easy, guys with the proper experience come in as full rate journeyman, there is a 6 months probation period. The problem is we cant find good guys anywhere, we get lots posers, talking a big game but when put to the test they cant fix a sandwich.

I’m seeing openings in almost ALL unions in NYC. No one wants to get dirty.

    It should.

But it does not stop local guys from being idiots.

The former Local 420 Business Manager is now the HVACR Director at the General Office. I don't know if that good or bad - yet. All I know is that I haven't had any closure to my longstanding issues.

All I can tell you is that I have spoken to several guys in the president's office, and none of them got 420 to change their ways. Their attitude is to tell UA to jump in the lake. (Edited for internet posting)
