The place I work at installed solar panels with net metering I believe and then did an open house. Three other installers came and I got to talking to two of them about attempting to go off the grid with solar. This is in Sunny Central FL, but both seemed to think that was a bad idea compared to net metering. Was curious if anyone every ran into that situation. I happen to see the electric bill for our company and it is lower but nothing like what I expected. The roof was covered in solar panels with no trees or other blockage of the sun and was flat. It appears that our utility charge for solar generation is less than what they charge their customers. And that would suggest living off the grid to be better than net metering from what little I know.
