Mixing 407C and R22
So I am at the parts house chatting with other techs about the price R22 and I come to find out that there are some techs that are no longer buying R22 and just adding 407C
to R22 systems that are low on charged. I am told that it is "ok" to mix the two.
To me, this is an unacceptable practice. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

There are still people who think that it was OK to mix some of the various R-12 replacement gasses.
It has never been acceptable to field-mix refrigerants except under very tightly controlled circumstances. Those circumstances are typically found in ultra-low temp and biomedical stuff, not Joe Homeowner's back yard.
Just don't.

Let us know how that works out with mineral oil.

As long as it is a package unit with undersized piping and no receiver . . .

In my area a lot of techs doing are doing it. Some are mixing R422D with 22.
This sets the senario for a unit that has been serviced by multiple techs
to have a mixture of R22,R407C and R422D.
Some of the counter guys at the supply houses are telling people its ok to mix them. I even heard one "tech" saying R407C cools better if you charge
it in vapor.
I have given up trying to explain why you should not mix refrigerants.
It's sad.
I miss you mom and dad.

You are creating a new and untested refrigerant. So not only is it frowned upon. I'd guess its against the law somewhere.
I like DIY'ers. They pay better to fix.

Well yeah, but, if you call it new AND improved, you can charge more for it.

That is exactly what I was told.... it is ok if you charge in vapor. I still think this is unacceptable. I would never mix refrigerants just to save $$$.
-
Never mix. I would be fired if my boss knew i was mixing refrigerants.
