Yellow Jacket 8 cfm here.. But looking for a new one. No complaints with it, but seems like the JB platinum is getting the highest rating in this thread.

I'd be interested in hearing why? No ball busting just facts.

Well I'll be putting an 8cfm on the priority list for this season for sure. Thanks MetalMan for the info from your usage.

Use vcrts, 2 1/2" hoses and nylog. Do this and On residential systems the cfm of the pump is almost irrelevant. On a 5 ton with +- 50' of line, I can get under 500 microns in about ten mins on a new system. About 30 on an existing one. I've always used what ever crap pump the company has provided. Brand, quality and condition has varied. 6-7 cfm. As long as I've kept the oil changed the times have all been comparable.

True tech and most supply houses will let you custom order vacuum hose. Get a set of 36" or 48" long 1/2" hoses with 1/4" fittings on one side and 3/8" on the other. Make or buy a 3/8x3/8x1/2 tee.

I'd spend the coin on these things first.

That being said my vote is for the JB platinum.

That's fine. But why? Is it personal preference or what?

I would vote for the JB as one of the best out there. But if you really want top shelf you would love the TEZ8

I don't know. I had an Eastman many years ago, then I thing it was a GE. Finally got a JB navana. Other than the time I got caught short and bought a cheap Robinair (that did the job), I have used JB for the last 30 years, until I bought the TEZ8. Very happy with the TEZ8.

I'm not so sure I'd love a TEZ8 the more I see about it.
This looks like when you change the oil container you really aren't changing all the oil just most of it. If the pump part didn't hold on to dirty oil it would be starting dry each time.

I've been seeing this with coworkers TEZ pumps.

They do a dirty evac and have a hard time getting the machine clean again.

Me? Dump the oil, add new, run 5 minutes, repeat. Done

    JP a TEZ?
I was wondering if you could just dump oil into the intake to clear the actual pump like a J/B

Don't know and I'm not super worried about it. I have a JB pump and, if it lives as long as my first YJ pump did, I'll retire with that pump in my truck.

The TEZ seems to me to be mostly a sales gimmick. Their recovery machines are awesome. People don't like the somewhat messy job of changing pump oil, so they made a quick change system.

    Whoopee.

Just change the oil and get back to work...

    Agree...

The TEZ8 is a different pump entirely...
Some folks do not like different.

I have used one for over 4 years...
    Literally NO issues at all.

And they use less oil... one changes the little cartridge, not a quart...

If you could buy one that is say 6 yrs old for around 300 bucks would you? Looks in good shape. Even with a rebuild be ahead of the game.

I guess I am in the distinct minority here in that I don't believe bigger is better. I tell my girlfriend that all the time. My vacuum is a 1.7 CFM Bacharach QV2. I would have purchased a small Yellow Jacket, but they were discontinued.

It is under 20#. Less than $200 from TruTech with HVACTalk discount. Thinking about getting another one. That way if I need a bigger vacuum for a system over 7.5 Tons, then I'll just put one on the high side and one on the low side.

I try to think tactically. "Two is One, and one is none!"

I've not used any one pump long enough to speak to their long longevity, but of the five or so I've used it feels the most solid/durable. The housing is easier to wipe oil off of as well. So just personal preference I guess.

I trust JB just because its all I've used and its never let me down. My first 5 years I had a used JB 5 cfm with no problems. Now that I'm working on larger systems more often, I got my employer to get me a JB platinum 10 cfm and it works great.

I ended up buying a jb platinum dv-200n pump today and used it 1/2 later. I like getting new tools!

I have a tool addiction. I own use primarily 3)JB's 1-5cfm & 1-7cfm s/s, & a 10cfm. I also own a YJ bullet, an Appion tez8, a Robenaire 6cfm blue handle. All of them work good when you use the Appion schrader core remover tools, 1/2" or 3/8" vacuum rated hoses, and change the oil regularly!!! With this type of set up there shouldn't be an issue achieving less than 500 microns and holding it.

With that said I prefer the JB pumps because they pull to a low vacuum faster and hold it, it's just my preference.
I do NOT like the Appion it is a pain in the butt to me!!!
The Robenaire's seem cheap to me and take to long to pull down, I give them to the guys that are rough on stuff.
