Xlt recovery machines liquid vs vapor

Just wondering, what is the difference between these two settings? Does the liquid setting just restrict/throttle the inlet more than the vapor setting?

The liquid setting on the recovery machine throttles refrigerant slowly into the suction port of the compressor thus preventing “liquid-slugging” the compressor.

The proper procedure for recovering refrigerant is:
When the Low Pressure Gauge starts going down, during recovery, that is when the selector valve should slowly be turned from Liquid to Vapor setting.
