    I read in Ducks Unlimited once to cut a hole in them and mount them to trees in the woods along creeks/marshes. Wood ducks will use them as nest boxes. Always have said Im going to do it but never have.

    This is only an intermittent answer - but you can take it to the bank in the short term:

    An angle grinder will make a sh!t weld into a pretty weld in almost no time. <g>

    It's not an end-solution but it will help get you through until you become truly great at welding. Which you will - if you just keep at it and remain unsatisfied.
