I belong to a rock club at our Natural History museum.
One member is on the short list to go. He's been training
For some time. Very talented guy.

My thoughts are he should be in the back seat of a convertible on
a summer night with a person of his choice rather then a rock with little chance of returning.

Eventually, yes. It might even be a good PR move resulting in more funding. However, I'd prioritize the following, unsexy projects:

    1) Non-rocket propulsion to get us and our stuff into space. With a bit of an up-front investment, we can bring down the cost per kilo to 1% of Musk's wildest wet dreams. Right now, getting stuff into space is too expensive and the real bottleneck to space exploration

    2) Establishing an infrastructure for our solar system exploration efforts. Fuel, spare parts, repair services, transport hubs, even manufacturing facilities.

The wider the base, the taller the tower

    Space,
    I am a "NASA/space" enthusiast!
I truly believe our ultimate future is in space.
But I also believe all this going to Mars stuff is only 100% politics!
Sending satellites and robots give us valuable science information.

At a recent Washington, D.C. conference called “Humans 2 Mars Summit,” NASA chief Charles Bolden said getting to Mars is a second opportunity for America to lead in space exploration. American astronauts were the first to land on the moon in 1969
I am sorry, Bolden is a political HACK, period.
If Obama stops short, Boldens noise will be so far up his butt, that Bolden will suffocate!

It would make more sense to have a "base" on the moon first.
If nothing else to learn how to live/work in another atmosphere.
And if you dial 911, someone might hear ya.
    Life is too short, Behappy!

a good place to send D Trump, he would build hotel tower blocks all over, in cojunction with Virgin airlines space module program, and create employment opportunities and export as well.
there's a good idea, sell Mars to Trump and Branson for a dollar.

Hopefully it will be more realistic than the last deep space mission.

Before any more deep space plans, what about cleaning up our act on this current planet.
If Nasa spent 20% of funding on this planet it would be better than space program dream time, despite what JFK stated in the 60's . I am no greenie what ever believe me. But I quite like the place.
If you are interested I have the property rights to a star some where out there, cannot remember the name, but a hell of a drive getting there. All yours for a minimal payment, and rights will be forwarded.

I think sending people to Mars would be good thing. I have been compiling a list of people I would like to send there, today if possible!

The Earth, Moon, Mars, and Christopher Columbus

To compare and contrast such a trip to an earlier pioneering human voyage, let’s look at the first voyage across the Atlantic of Christopher Columbus and his small fleet: the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Trip time was also a key driver of this voyage, because more sailing time meant a greater need for fresh water and food, more exposure to the sea and the elements and what this does to the crew and the ships, more frayed nerves and anxiety, and perhaps even more scurvy.

Columbus and his crew sailed from the Spanish port near today’s Huelva headed southwest, and six days later stopped at the Canary Islands for a month of repairs, restocking, rest, and planning. His tiny fleet then sailed pretty much due west from there, headed for the East Indies—but actually landing in what is today some island (no one knows for sure which) in the Bahamas.

Read the rest and see the map:

Anyone remember the Burma Shave signs along the road? If not the little red signs would have only part of a poem and you would read the next part a couple hundred feet further.

Anyway I remember this one about Mars.
FREE FREE A TRIP TO MARS FOR 900 EMPTY JARS BURMA SHAVE

Well as the story goes a consumer sent in 900 jars. To not be guilty of false advertising the company sent the consumer to Mars.......Mars Germany.

This was from a book about the signs. I think it was called "The Signs Along The Road"

    So why are we here?
