    vehicle/vehicle insurance
    liability insurance
    tools and repair parts
If you cant charge the going rate on calls you will find you break even MORE THAN NOT I find its a full time job just keeping a job

yep , i was taking calls during lunch hr , and sometimes took a really long lunch hr .... eventually it gets you in trouble. You have to be careful if you want to keep the full time job

it can be done. honestly, a lot of guy's started out that way. it's hard work and you really gotta want it. you will at some point want to give up. the bad part is some customers may suffer because of lack of time on your part. try to get hooked up with builders so you can concentrate on installs and build this way. i built my first hvac biz the same way and then sold it. but because of the hard work and determination it certainly made it a lot quicker and easier to build my second, and current, mechanical biz. with all the knowledge here it will take some stress away. i wish i had the option.

Most Guys /gals use a full time job ,to aquire BENEFITS.
Those days are coming to a END now with the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
More and More people will lose that nice cushion and relize scheduling and doing this type of work full time ,COULD pay more if you invest 100%
I,m making that decision (as I type this) my health plan ,if when it happens (next year) has me paying more out of pocket .will force me to work at My Buisness 150% and cover ALL my expenses

I know of quite a few guys around here who work like that. One in particular works for the
Dept of Corrections (doing hvac) ,he drives his service truck to work . He does his service calls after work
and on weekends, his customers work understand his availability.

Another guy is a fireman and one is a corrections officer .

That's how I got started, but I had an advantage. I worked in a factory on a 12hr night shift, we would work 3 days one week and 4 days the next. I could go straight from work at 7am and catch a few calls before I had to go lay down and do installs on my days off. It also provided a customer base of about 300 people who knew I did HVAC.

Does your hospital run a third shift that you could work? Work third shift AND run full time business during the day.

That was me. I was working a resort job 4-12 and doing Ac in the day. It worked for awhile. Just didn't pay to work the resort and do the Ac anymore. Nice to have dinner at home with the family. :-)
