    SDP2 Initial Thoughts

So last year I purchased the AAT3 Head and loved it. Then promptly lost it 3 months later when my meter went missing with the aat3 in the bag. So somewhere somebody has my HS33 and AAT3 with no probe (haha). So I couldn't afford to replace the head till now and decided to get the new SDP2. While I lose the velocity measurement (hint hint Fieldpiece) I gain two probes for simultaneous readings. If it only saves me a few minutes in a hot attic it's worth it.
Had to pick up my package from the brown shirt people since they tried to deliver while I was at work. She handed me the box and I was at first a little confused. I was expecting a package similar in size to one their stick meters, instead I got a box the size of a brief case. Opened it up and found an awesome hard case protecting my new tool. Only problem is the case is useless. It's so huge it won't fit in my tool bag. I was hoping/assuming (yeah I know) that it would come with a soft case. Now I'll be digging through the garage to try and find an old soft case from a meter. Pulled out the meter love the blue screen back light, love the probes, hate the rubber protective boot. I'm sure FP put alot of development time and money into this tool. If the tool has two probes shouldn't there be two holders for the probes and not just one? Also the magnet seems like it was a last minute thought. It just hangs off the back of the rubber boot. Again I assumed (yep I know) it would be like the multimeters and be retained in a cut out on the back of the meter. I would have rather spent less and received a soft bag and a better boot. No loss the hard case will probably wind up being used for discreet 2A transport. And just gonna have to live with the boot I guess.
Can't wait to try the tool at work. Now if only the heatwave would come back so I could do AC calls and stop doing heater cleanings/ busy work.

wouldn't skipping the padded case be bad for that meter?

Especially in a tool bag with all the heavy hand tools banging against it? I'd be worried about the feeler tips most of all. They're made of glass I think. If you lose a feeler tip cover you will sure enough break the tips.
If I owned one of those I would use the padded case.

I've had mine for about 2 months now. I actually like the case. Granted its a little big but it will keep it in good shape. The sta2 case is just as durable but a little smaller. Like previously stated I would worry about the tips more than anything.

As for the design it's basically the same shell as some of there other tools. The sta2, sdmn5 and maybe some others.

Fwiw it's probably the coolest tool I've bought in awhile.

No heavy tools to worry about. Tool bag is for AC only.

Old meter bag that I currently use.

    Out with the old

    In with the new

Probes will live in the main compartment off to the side. I have some extra cover tips that I had found when I was worried about damaging the probe for the aat3.

Case is huge. I drive a service van not a tractor trailer. Let alone there no way to carry it with everything else.

FP hard case hiding my tool bag

Damn near the size of the sofa cushion

I will say though, it is an awesome case

I think you better check with the guy you bought that from. From what I have heard they come only in the hard case. They may be somebody elses returns that they repaired and sent to you..

Who did you buy it from?

I've had a chance to use the SDP2 three times now and so far I love it. Readings are so much quicker and easier to read. Love taking both the supply and return wb at the same time. The huge case hasn't left the house.
Would love to see FP come out with a basic receiver that displays info from wireless devices without the analyzer functions. Or even if they were using bluetooth technology and be able to receive signals on smart phones. Would also like to have a third K thermocouple on the SMAN to display the outdoor temp maybe in the middle of the display. One less device to hook up and wouldn't have to disconnect on of the clamps. And I will say it again I would love to see the hot wire anemometer function incorporated into the SDP2. Being able to do those functions in one piece would be incredible, like an AAT3 on steroids. I know it would be one less piece of equipment they could sell but it would make techs lives easier by having less equipment to carry.
