Why?

What are the two lines connected to that external U-bend ?

First drain? Or an oil change after the first one?

If first: what do the condenser coils look like? Is there a HP safety? Is it manual or automatic reset?

No; not for down flow suction. All it would do would be to increase the pressure drop by three 90's worth.

Wouldn't that be prudent to do? Furnace control transformers are often sized pretty close to bare minimum aren't they.
