Any new designs on return air grills for noise reduction? Will be moving the return air grill and duct from a family room just above a reclining tv chair and around the corner unless there is some new alternative?
Reduce velocity, and noise levels will fall quickly.
Is this a central return? What size is the grill and what size is the equipment?
3 ton. The noisy ceiling grill in question is 20 x 32 approx and spans across two ceiling joists. At one point the noisy return grill shared a ceiling joist with the upstairs return. Sometime a few years ago the upstairs return was routed down its own ceiling joist duct to the top of the furnace plenum, in other words, they don't share the same ceiling joist. That made the return upstairs do its job.
I wish they would have spent the time and used metal duct instead of just the ceiling joist cavity. Also noticed that there are electrical wires crossing the airflow and probably not air sealed. No wonder the edge of the carpets above that area are always dirty. They are filtering dust along the edges!
