Couple of other things about this pool...

*There is about 500 sq/ft of pool water heaters (solar) on the roof... it is the North side of the house... so it does not get enough sun to work year round. Still though... I get a 4.5 - 5.5 month swim season (the pool roof actually slows the sun heating the water).

*The roof structure is great for keeping leaves and yard trash out of the water...
    However...
It can get as high as 130*F air temp in there...
If you look carefully at the underside of the structure... at the ridge... there are 'skylights' on each side...
According to the previous owner... they move and can open... to allow heat to rise out.
(According to the lady that used to work for the previous owners... they never worked).
Currently they do not move... stuck... they are motorized, and when I tried to actuate the motor, the cables broke. Given where it is... access to repair it is an issue (I am a big guy)...

First of March, will go out and open the valves and start the water running to the heaters on the roof... if there is a freeze warning, have to drain it...
Comfortable swimming is water temp in the mind 80's... current is 56... will take about 6 weeks, given clouds and air temp (air temp has a lot to do with it).

Dieseldude... THX for the offer... I have learned a bit about pools since I bought the place 4+ years ago...
I plan to do the 1 day 'pool school' online... so I can get a cert that says I am a pool guy.
I have about a dozen customers... who will pay me for spring pool opening... (they do their own weekly service). Plan to do it along with the Spring check of their systems.

What I am looking for... is a HP style pool heater... that does not work... with a good HXE in it.
I can repair the rest... and use it to extend swim season a month or so.

THX guys... for the comments on the pool...
Honestly... when I bought this place (was 66 years old when I signed my life away
I did not realize how much I was biting off...
    4+ acres
    BIG house
    Lots of trees
    Pool
    Out buildings
Yeah... lots to take care of!

Yeah... previous owner did the roof thingy... they had lots of cash... and spent a lot on this property...
Then age caught up with them... they let it get into dis-repair.

    I got it as a 'fixer-upper'...
The ONLY way I could have afforded it.

I was 'house poor' for a couple of years...
Until I got a bunch of stuff done:
    *New HVAC including ductwork
    *New tankless water heaters
    *Major plumbing repairs and upgrades
*Major electrical repairs and still need to finish the upgrade (change the box)

Owning a place like this... takes a lot of time and money...
However it is really a nice place to live.

    Speaking of pools...

At the start of February... did a chemical test and started bringing my pool out of winter...

Generally... I let it go all winter (from around October first until February first)... then bring it back up.
I test the chemicals once a month... so it does not go 'too far' out of water balance.
One issue with this pool... there is a creek close to it... so draining it is NOT an option (the concrete would literally come out of the ground... ). Then in February, go after it and bring it back up to spec!

Water temp got down to 49*F (Christmas cold spell... record cold here)...
Water temp is up to 56*F now.

I need to sweep the walls and floor... vacuum... take the filter apart and clean it... rebuild the backwash valve... Maybe rebuild the pump (seals).

I have a 'TigerShark' automatic pool cleaner... got it from the previous owner...
It is similar to the top of the line 'Daulphene' available now.
Need to take it apart and repair it... so I do not have to clean the pool by hand anymore.

I plan to start the roof pool water heaters the first of March... if it freezes, will shut them down for a few days.
Plan is to get the pool ready early... for a longer swim season.

I am looking for a HP style pool heater... if anyone has one that is non-functional that they want to get rid of... as long as the HXE is good... I am interested in a deal...

I really like swimming as a form of aerobic exercise...

This is what the pool looks like clean:

Here are a couple of things:

    This site:
    Troublefreepools.com

    They are the guru site...
LOTS of tech articles and a forum...
    This is where I learned.

Next: Get a salt chlorine generator... it is like night and day... no more burning skin and burning eyes, the chlorine smell almost goes away.

Next: Get a high end pool chemical testing kit, and do the full tests... it is fun to play with... and when you do the testing as recommended... and keep a log... after a year or so, you learn a HUGE amount about pool water chemistry!

Next... Leslie's pool supply stores have a 'pool school' class... it is one day, costs a couple $hundred. You get a pool service certification... You could add that to the services you offer... I did the class, easy if you pay attention in class.
I have about a dozen customers (hand picked, I do not advertise this service)... where I go 'open up' their pools, before AC season starts...
    Easy $$$...

Now that I have posted, will keep an eye on your thread... see if I can help with stuff...

Ironically the mechanical one locally is double the cost of the Wi-Fi one online. I was going to buy the mechanical one locally if it was cheaper because I like spending locally but the price and the fact that I would prefer Wi-Fi control. It is hard to justify the mechanical one.
I need to check what my local pool store has because I really don't like spending my money online.

I am trying to decide between a Wi-Fi timer or a simple mechanical timer.
I was looking at the one below.

I rigged it up with a inline chlorinator and today I finally got everything to stop leaking. The clorinator included an o-ring on the control knob that was too small so I had to use a automotive AC o-ring that was a little fatter to get it to seal. The pipe going vertical just before the black chlorinator is a fountain that sprays out over the water for the kids. Initially I thought I might use it for cooling the water when it was starting to get too hot I would run it at night to evaporatively cool the water but I find that I don't need it. The pipe that runs over the side of the pool beside the skimmer basket is just a second suction because the pump is so large. The new filter gives a filter head pressure of 18 to 20 psi clean.

I was just getting this finished up so I could finish filling the pool up and fire up the pump today and I am one foot short so I'm having to run to home Depot to get more pipe. [emoji3525]

The old filter was 1.4 ft² of effective filtration area and the new one is 2.2 ft² of effective filtration area. I am hoping that will help bring the pump discharge pressure a little lower because with the old filter it was 25 PSI. That pump is a monster.
