Not making excuses; just clarifying:

He died of lung cancer, but it wasn't the kind that people get from smoking. It was a rare form of lung cancer that was passed to him genetically. Erick Erickson has explained this from time to time on his radio show.

Erick's wife has the same form of lung cancer. It's not curable yet, but doctors have figured out how to control it. Erick's wife has to go in for periodic monitoring and treatment. She is doing well.


As far as exercise goes, Rush was referring to people he called "exercise freaks," not the general population. And he made his remark when discussing Obama's health care plan (partly, I think, because he himself was overweight):

They probably don’t even know their doctors’ names. So you’re urging to go out there do all of this stuff and you’re ending up in the hospital all the time with these injuries and some people think these injuries are badges of honor. A knee surgery scars a badge of honor shows toughness. Yeah. Toughness, somebody else has to pay for.

For those not familiar with his broadcasts, Rush was well known for speaking tongue in cheek, and then getting quoted out of context. Who in his right mind really believes that exercise is bad for you?

If he had really meant what he said, he would have been insulting much of his radio audience. But few of them were offended.

As for his drug addiction: Yes, he was addicted to oxycontin, as were millions of Americans who were given opioid prescriptions during the Opioid Epidemic. Oxycontin was prescribed for him after he had back surgery. From May 2015:

"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life," Limbaugh said Friday on his program. "So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication."

Limbaugh said he began taking the medication "some years ago" when his doctor prescribed it after spinal surgery, to treat post-operation pain.

But the operation was unsuccessful and the back pain stemming from the surgery persisted, so Limbaugh said he started taking pills without knowing how addictive they were. He became hooked.

He said he's tried to break his dependence on the painkiller and twice checked himself into medical facilities for treatment.

Limbaugh promised listeners he would again enter rehab for the next 30 days, immediately following Friday's broadcast, "to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me."
