I suggest a Megger MIT 420. I got rid of my fluke 1587 for it. I truely like it much better and wouldn't hesitate to buy another in the future.

Megger is the manufacturer of Insulation testers know around the world. When You "MEGG" a compressor out is slang for performing an insulation test since Megger was the first of its kind available.

AEMC, BK Precsion, Gossen MetrawattFluke/Amprobe all makes great insulation tester. Megger would be choice over Gossen Metrawatt.

Dump that Supco POS....Get a real insulation tester!

(If not made in the USA, Germany would be my next choice)

you would need 2 meters that can measure volts and amps and save the maximum value. a little more complicated but it would work.

Which part wouldn’t work on start caps? The “10,000 uF” part or the “while operating” part?

    Same here. 1587.
Werks for me. Plus it doubles as a decent meter.

    So dont be cheap.

I told him it was worth much more. He said he knew but had a bunch of things to sell and the family just wanted it done quickly without much effort.

Anyway, great megger if you can find one for a good price. I just did a nationwide search for one on Craigslist. There are a couple available for under $400. One in Seattle and one in Texas if anyone is around those areas.

Yeah I would be sceptical of people offering to ship items on CL..I would almost bet he would not have trust you to receive the item, inspect then pay..But everyone once in a while you will come across people that will do the right thing..Glad it worked out for you..That's a killer deal.

I have used an Amprobe AM-45 for many years. Good quality, accurate, but only goes to 1000 volts. Reasonably priced. Has some features for documenting trends or just to store into a file.

I’ve used the analog hand crank for years but it’s hard to get a true megaohm reading.
