I am a homeowner in the process of replacing the heat and A/C system. I live in the southeast and have a natural gas furnace and electrical A/C. In theory, would a heat pump increase my electric bill and reduce my gas bill during heating months? Thanks!

Ummm... It would defiantly be more than theory... You would not be using gas AT ALL to heat your home if you switched to a heat pump AND your electric bill would climb because of the additional load...

You would see an increase in your bills but depending on the seer rating it may not be as bad as you think. If the money is there go with the 16 or 19 with the 90 two stage varaible and digital stat

BEFORE making the switch, read LOTS here --
be sure your ductwork is correct
do a load calculation to determine where your biggest losses are
you should consider upgrading any item of the house needing attention = insulation, storm windows & doors, sealing elec boxes, etc
