For those who saw my pix on Fall Colors thread, you'd know the Loonie had some R&R in Gatlinburg. We stayed at a rental house up on the side of the hill rather than a tiny motel room in town. Of course I had to check out the climate control equipment. This was 1 floor on a walk out basement. Equipment was a year or 2 old.
This is the air handler in a basement bedroom closet. You can see return pulls from the bottom.

They made sure air got through the louvered doors! Of course pulling return air from a cold basement did little to help cool the main level where the heat gain was :(

Smart as they were to put big return grilles in the louvered door, what happens when the bedroom door is closed? Let me tell ya, it ain't easy to get closed with the 3 ton air handler on!

Outdoors wasn't impressive either. That outdoor unit will look good 20 years from now but won't be working. Talk about recirculating. Even damaging the plywood on the underside of the deck though it may not be visible in the picture.
