View Full Version : 4 in 1 Motors?

Needed a 1/3 hp condenser fan motor cpl days ago, supply house didnt have it in the right mount, so they gave me 4 in 1 motor. So I was expecting to see lots of wires and a diagram to configure it to what I needed. But just 4 wires (2 for cap and two power leads) Course the homeowner was watching over me so I was kind of embarrassed when I didn't know what to so.. Called the supply house but of course they couldnt help, gave me a # for tech support, called and just got VM. So I just plugged it in a took off. Can someone tell me what the deal is w those motors??

2 wires for your power and 2 wires for capacitor. Lot of times OEM is 3 wire but no biggie to use the 4 wire. Often there's a diagram on the side of the motor.

What brand were you using? The ones I have seen have multiple HP leads.

I see them w/4 wires for 4 or 3 wire motors. the tan and tan/white stripe are connected internall to the motor. You can do separate cap w/the two tans, or dual cap and wire nut the white or white/tan wire.

Some have screws on the side of motor, that's for a rheem setup.

Most multi-hp condenser motors have 5 wires.
Brown & Brown with white stripe = capacitor
White = common(hot leg)
Red or Black depending on hp being used = hot leg
Cap off the unused red or black
That's my experience anyway with multi-hp motors

Did that condensor motor use a different sized capacitors for the multi hp? I have seen some 5 wires that require a different sized capacitor depending on the hp used.

Yes on some diff cap diff volts. & Some diff cap diff HP. & some high & low speeds. You get a lot of options for little $-- real cheap @ Goodman dist!

Suppliers are always running out of condenser fan motors. Good parts was the last brand I used. Worked out okay.

That motor in the photo is like my Rescue motors, 1 size cap for 208v and a diff cap for 230v.

Maybe what he was asking was how to select the needed HP if it had two wires for the cap and two wires for power. I've never seen that, most having five wires; two cap, red and black for HP selection and white for the other leg.

The OP has a 1 speed motor, single HP. How about the motor spec's there Mr.OP.

Looks to me like a only really has 2 hp selections - 1/3 & 1/4 are the same tap and 1/5 & 1/6 are the same tap.
Also looks like it has 5 wife's, 2 for cap, neutral/L2 and either red or black for HP/L1.

I tried doing some research on this.

It appears that the windings are more robust on the multi-HP motors. Although two HP ratings use the same tap, they can handle a greater variance in amps created by the load while maintaining close to the same RPM's without overheating.

What is the motor info.

We can only guess without it.
