Gas Pool Heater Exhaust Location Advice

Hi,

I have a gas pool heater inside a pool shed and it was vented out of the roof. I had asked the contractor to place the vent on the lower end of the right side of the roof. Unfortunately they did not (see attached pic).

I emailed the service manager this:
I would like the vent moved. I asked to put it on the lower end of the roof and they crew put it on the highest part. It really does not look good. I believe it was done to save on material/time. I would have gladly paid the extra cost rather then having to look at this for the next 20 years.
The service managers response was:
The vent would have to stick up past the peek of the roof by 2' regarless where it comes through the roof. I know you wanted the visual aspect of having farther too the right but would have stuck out the roof farther. And we can only run the vent on so much of an angle inside aswell. Its the gas code we need to follow.
Inside the shed the vents were at 90° joints and I don't know of any gas codes that limit the location of the exhaust vent. Is he just trying to avoid moving the vent? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
RPS

Thanks for the response t527ed. Not really following what you're saying. Is the Flue pipe the thing sticking out of the roof? Why can't it be put lower down, closer to the edge of the roof instead of the peek of the roof?

Same reason all the home pipes stick up the way they do.

They won't draft properly.

sure, you can move it down, but there WILL be another 5 feet of pipe to look at, plus bracing in 2 areas for the longer pipe supports. And that's assuming the the interior has the proper amount of space to get the right amount of pitch/rise. yes, there's codes for this. plus, the roof repairs will need to be done...

side note - while the manager cant spell, you should count your blessings that he and his crew followed the codes. Most people come in here to complain about hack jobs and lack of following established codes.

X2 on Marc above....

A good contractor follows the codes....

A bad contractor does whatever the customer wants....even if it will kill the customer, cause they want the sale.

If it's that big of a deal, paint it black.

Also, IF they put it lower on the roof, the tree would have to be cut back. As it doesnt look like you own the tree, I wish you luck with that!
