How do you rate Coleman air-to-air heat pumps? How do they compare to Tempstar? Pros and cons? Bad experiences?

just buy carriers performance ht.pump or trane and forget about all the others. theres only a slight differance in the price of a good system and the rest. the real differance in prices is what the contractor sells his equipment for. and the better contractors will sell the better brands.

Coleman is basically low end York.
TempStar is ICP with a different badge as is Heil.
I may be wrong but I think both use Bristol compressors, TempStar coils are made in Mexico and are notorious for freon leaks.
I'll probably catch some flak for this, but for around the same cost check out Goodman.
Copeland compressors, better warranty, coils made in the USA.

I'd pick the tempstar over the coleman.

ICP (Tempstar) have Copeland scrolls in them...and the premium line of ICP has better warranties than all the above...within a matched system it has a 10/5 warranty and a 5 year replacement warranty ( if the compressor fails in 5 years, you recieve a new unit not counting labor).. The evaporaters are made in Mexico and the indoor coils are actually "Carrier" look real close the ICP indoor air handlers have Carrier stickers on the blower section........

Yes, you are wrong.
Premium models have Copeland scrolls.

Yes, they are madel in Mexico (like so much other ****  ), but I have data that will prove you claim of "notorious" to be incorrect.
To the OP, go with the Tempstar Premium line with the scroll, and if you want a better warranty... look here. Tempstar's cooling products are here.

UTC owns Carrier and ICP
Carrier markets Carrier, Bryant & Payne
ICP markets AirQuest, Arcoaire, Comfortmaker, Heil, KeepRite, Tempstar, etc...

In what sense is the Coleman a "low-end York"? Is it notorious for breakdowns? Poor warranty? Inefficient?

Its basically builders grade.
Its the third name in the UPG line up.

Definietly 'Tempstar' over coleman ( who mainly produced mobile home unit before reaching into the res. market)
I have been putting in 'tempstars' for 15 years - never have I had a problem with leaking indoor coils - have only changed out maybe two indoor coils that we installed in those years. Have replaced many more Rheen/Rhuud and 'goodman' coils less than ten years old, than 'tempstar'.
In this case, this is more than MHO, it is fact!!
Also ,before you decide, check the BTU rating of the compressor in the Coleman vs the Tempstar.
