digital manometer for static pressure

So I bought a digital manometer the other day and I have long needed one because I have gotten my butt handed to me on furnaces by not having one. Well I want to know how to check static pressure with it. I have tried to just stick it in the duct but that doesn't seem right....any suggestions?
