I'd stick with the LP control and 409 or equivalent gas.
I agree LP over T-stat in that app. is the best way to go.
Let the thing live and you'll also make that customer really happy by saving them some cash.

Go with 409. You don't have the horsepower to do 22 if it was designed with 12 originally. Pressure control is the simplest way to do it, but if you're not comfortable with it, buy a thermostat. To set the control as is, get out your PT chart, and look at your setpoint box temp vs. saturation presssure for whatever refgt you choose.

R409 Cut in 38 PSI, Cut out about 20 PSI. If you crank the SSV almost closed with your gauge on it, the unit will short cycle on the LPS and you can check your actual cut in and cut out from there, just be sure to set the cut in pressure first.
R134A, with a POE oil change in the old compressor. Cut in 33 cut out about 17.
Put on a site glass and charge until the site clears.
If the system is cycling very fast may be short on refrigerant, short on cycle followed by long off cycle may mean restriction or a failing txv?

beckmech,
Here's what you have.
The JL-501 Copeland semi was replaced with a KAE-0050. It's not 70 yrs old, probably closer to 50.
1/2 HP
R-12 medium temp
4705 btuh @ +25 SST
95 ambient / 110 CT
It's an oldie, keep it going if you can and take pictures. Old running stuff is pretty cool to see.

I've used MP-39 with very good success also.
