How to remove a failed rooftop unit sans crane

These are pics of my favorite day in my career thus far I was charged with disassembly of and removal of the unit removal by throwing off the side of the building, in pieces. If demolition paid better ide change careers

Ive done a few like that, thats how you change a rooftop by yourself, disassemble the old one, throw it in there dumspter, have new one delivered at the same time that crane is scheduled to lift new one up.

Why not just use the crane to lower the old one onto the trailer to haul off.

Did you get some good coin out of the coils?

why in the hell would you do that?

it only takes 30 minutes to disconnect the electric and gas and have the crane lift the old unit off, 1 hour if the duct is screwed in from the bottom and you have to brake all the screws free.

cranes usually charge 2 hour min. anyway, what was the point of this?

My former boss would rather pay me for a day of this than rent a crane and move me on to anouther job he dosent think logically like that, but I dident mind I enjoyed myself and no the coils went in to his pile o copper not mine.

Good experience if you decide on a life of copper theft.

My thoughts exactly. I always unwire and unpipe (if gas) the old unit an hour before the crane is scheduled to arrive. If you paid for 2 hours of crane rental, make them remove the old unit and get your money's worth. It only takes 5 minutes to shackle the old unit and have them lower it down to the trailer.

I did that once on a old 15 ton Fedders rooftop unit that bottom was rusted out. We were afraid the compressors would fall out if the crane pick it up.

hint for next time---its more fun to throw it off the building in one piece.

not sure how you would do that though.

a 1 ton window unit out a second story window is fun. according to my calculations, a 10 ton rooftop should be at least 10 times as fun

How cool.

I happen to be making myself a collection of short videos of me throwing sh*t off of the roof to make my "HVAC-Air Mail" video someday.

When I've had time, I've actually placed my Kodak at ground level filming where the stuff crashes down, and my palm taking video from the roof level.

Stuff bounces, crashes, and explodes quite well if you're three stories up!

When I get enough footage I'll make the video and post it on youtube with the rest of my awesome HVAC videos.
