Tipping
I have a couple guys installing a furnace and running new duct. Would it insult them or is it customary to tip at the end of a job?

Is there anyone who would get insulted by a offer of a tip? Noone I know. However, like stated, some aren't allowed to accept it, so if they refuse don't you get insulted. As far as customary, no. It's an extremely nice jesture. If you're real pleased with their work, offers of drinks(water, whatever) goes along way.

Actually my wife goes to an electrolysis technician and she seemed a tad put off by the offer of a tip. She considered herself a professional and refused it by saying "the price is the price". She said it kindly but firmly. I'm always awkward when it comes to this (amount, etc.). And, I always offer food and drink.

Cash is nice. But if tips are not allowed, a nice letter to the boss and/or to the local rag editor is the best thing you can do for them.

IMO there are many ways to show appreciation for/to someone that is 'going the extra mile'. And I personally think it is a good thing to re-enforce that choice... will make for a better tech.
Things like something to drink (soda, water, iced tea, etc), and snacky food mid morning and mid afternoon would be nice...
The point here is to reward effort.
As far as a 'professional' refusing a tip... sounds like a pride problem to me.

It is nice to get feedback from someone after all is said and done. It may not be required because the person is doing the job and getting paid for it anyways but just from my exp. having someone tip makes for a happy day no matter what the tip is. As stated above even a nice comment to the boss is greatly appreciated.

I think it is a kind gesture and is more of a pat on the back for the guys. I also think the food and drink are a good tip, don't have to give cash, just a good luch sometimes can go a long way. Maybe the guys will go the extra mile on your install.

Two points of view----owners say No----workers say YES.
Root of the business, MONEY Talks, and then keeps It's mouth shut.
PAY MORE, less need for tips, or side work

When working in a Hotel I always turned down the tip. I was paid good so the tip ment little. My coment was always, "NO that is not necessary I get paid good, but always tip the Bell hop, or other hotel employees."
