I got in by getting a job with a union company. While it does not hurt to know someone, if your good and the company is hiring they will put you in after about six months work. Local 638 is the Union in NYC. Good luck

It will be like joining the Mafia, or any local gang. They will jump you in, use you as a pawn for many years, charge you for making them rich, you will get to a point where you can never leave. Ive been rethinking this latley as I play Mafiawars on Facebook and now I believe its actually a good thing, not that I would join but in this economy and with our current leadership why not.

Find out if the hall has an apprentice program.
Get hired by a union firm and be worth what they pay you.

most of the bigger shops have 638A ...fitters,638B...hvac service and then the tinknockers and Local 28 all in one shop.don't know how the tin guys get in,but if you get hired as an apprentice with 638B you have to be in the union after 45 days and be enrolled in the apprentice program...all of this the company is forced to do with new guys
