Here we switch all 3 phases.

If we loose 1 through a burnt contact, wire or fuse, the compressor is said to be 2 phasing.

occasionally I've seen 3 phase compressor where only 2 phases are switched, particularly in old York airconditioning condensing units.

We reticulate at 240Vto earth, 415V between phases at 50 Hz.

    You're bringing in a single 240 and a ground, not 120/120?

We also have 415 volt single phase motors that use 2 phases.

    If you follow me.

They're something of a rarity though. Kirby tend to use them on their 3 phase condensing units so you don't need to run a neutral to it when installing it.

A bit of a trap for young players.

We don't use 120 here except for on control circuits in machines from over your way.
