They could have bought a RTU for what they spent on that Condenser.

Im seeing more and more of these. Its a sign of a weak economy. People are getting taken advantage of because they're desperate to save a buck.

And then they wind up with this.

Amen....If I can't sell them an entire new system, and someone else "takes advantage" of their ability to think, they must be a hack....

I would bet money that it works better than this hack job.

Standards are important and this falls well below whats acceptable to me and other techs I know in the area. Showed my buddies the pic.

I didnt take any more pics but without telling you can you imagine what kind of shape the rest of that package unit is in ?

Ill let you in on something, its a rust bucket with huge sheetsof insulation missing from the roof and panels.

Blower wheel is corroded to hell and it has no heat.

It sould have been replaced but some hack company jerry rigged a ICP 20 ton condensing unit in there to get the bid.

Im seeing more and more of these lately. Its not a high roof and its easily accessible with a crane. Just because some building owner felt like saving some money doesnt make that repair acceptable.

It's apparently acceptable to the customer....and isn't that who pays our freight?

When did customers become "obligated" to abide our recommendations, without seeking viable options?

what's wrong with that condenser replacement? you just have to repipe the whole thing. works the same, but not pretty. maybe only cost half a rooftop. then the next year the HXC blew....

looking at the install it does not appear to be hacked in.
4x4's appear to have roof padding under them to minimize sinking into gravel.

4x4's also longer than unit to disperse weight?

Piping does not appear to be run in soft copper but acr with fittings.
( i would have used soft with benders and swaging tool to make look neat)

    Cannot see electrical connections.

Maybe the contractor knew his customer well and this is what they came up with as a best solution within the budget the owner has to work with.

You consider that as a viable option ? I guess thats the difference.

Its our responsibillity to explain to them what is acceptable and whats hacked up jerry rigged junk.

Now if they chose to go the cheap route and ignore our advice then you did what you could do and you move on.

You dont lower your standards because the customer is too cheap to do the right thing. You shake his hand and tell him good luck.
