we will hire techs will all different skill levels. looking for a chiller tech as i write this but there are so few out there we will probably end up with another commercial tech and train him. if you know thats what you want to do the best thing to do is bring a good attitude. work ethic, and willingness to learn. all of them will take you far fast in our office. as far as the revolving door, that depends on the company. our biggest loss in the last 9 yrs was three techs at once. one became service manager and two went into service sales. all three were chiller techs. being a chiller tech myself, i was instantly a senior tech. we lost another tech last year to retirement, another one is retiring this year. we hired low skilled guys to replace all of them because thats all we could find. that being said, i say go for it, you wont regret it.
Toocool: It is unfortunate that the JCI employees that you have been dealing with are incompetent. It is also unfortunate that it takes so few bad apples to ruin the reputation of an organization like JCI. Management does a good enough job at running the branch into the ground without help from techs. Just out of curiosity, what city/ jci branch are you dealing with? How long ago was this?
I hate to say this, but I had a JCI Tech come out on an air cooled screw about a year ago, and he somehow burned out the LOW VOLTAGE transformer. I believe the machine was a YCAS.
I happened to know the tech that came out, and he asked for forgiveness so to speak, with the fear of losing his job, and asked me to please not tell his counterparts.
I went and bought a transformer put it in for him ,He was gone, .And I was still billed! Haha
That sounds about the way they do business. I have founds lots of stuff broken after their so called maintenance crew left. When calling the office to try to work things out they called my sup. and told him to tell me to stop complaining, of course we cancelled the contract.
When I worked at JCI, we made a few mistakes, still do, but never had the fear of losing our jobs over it. Sounds like bad management.
Maybe he has done something wrong in the past ?
They are getting a poor rep . But they must have something that nobody else does. Because I don't think we could get by without them. Well they own York So they are not going anywhere.
Here is another thought.
They can pick and choose what they want to do because they have that option apparently.
I've never worked for them nor am I bad mouthing them, just telling you readers my experience and my opinions.

Some JCI offices suck some are great.
Duckman: all jci branches suck! They are all controlled by the same corporate managers(puppet masters)! That being said, from what I see within my branch: there are those techs that would do such a job as "milkyway" discribed. I agree this is unexceptable period. It has more to do with personal ethics, and a sense of right and wrong.
Make serious inquiry into what kind of hours and on call slavery is required and ask yourself if you really want to give most of your life in this manner for a paycheck. As it was in Texas, you really will not have a life outside of total work in any real way.
Its a very unbalanced, brutal affair.
Getting your foot in the door with an outfit like Trane usually involves knowing some people. They will train persons to work on Centrifugal chillers and it goes about 3 years before you will be on your own typically.
Be sure it really what you want to do.
i don't know where you are located, but i doubt that i worked for you. i work for a jci branch. we are getting busier and busier and its going to be a crazy summer! and it isn't because of corporate policy...it is because of our local branch management and our local talent. we are very dedicated, communicate like crazy with our customers and our local management team...and they get it...they understand and show their appreciation. our office is going to rock-out this year!!
maybe not all of them are like us. but to blatantly say all branches suck, shows your lack of knowledge and insight.

We trade accounts with the local JCI branch pretty frequently. We go through periods where it seems like both of us are hemorrhaging service contracts, and then things turn around... It's a revolving door for accounts and techs in many cities...
Don't pick the fly crap out of the pepper.
Jayguy: you are absolutely right. I didn't join this website to bash company's and other mechanics. I joined to improve myself by learning from others experience, just like most people on this site. I spoke hastily and out of frustration about JCI. I still have a negative view of the local organization, but it was wrong of me to bash the organization as a whole on this site. I apologize, and appreciate your putting me in my place.

The toy chest is officially full ... I got a new toy..... 2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage and yes it still gives me goosebumps

its all good. i am a big believer in individual responsibility. if the local office is out of whack as a whole, then they deserve the reputation. if it is just 1 person (aka: the branch manager) is all goofed up, then that 1 person is to blame. i have seen organizations that were alive simply because 1 person was so good, they kept the whole company afloat...so it works both ways too.
