The one in the bag and the one that comes with the evap coil are usually one number different. Which are we supposed to use? and why change the one that came with the evap coil?

No I was not kidding. The one that came with the coil is not necessarily the correct one.
Customer complaint: "The company that installed this system has had to add refrigerant every spring and remove refrigerant each fall. Why is my system behaving this way?"
Answer: Incorrect installation and setup.
Recent: A one and a half ton condensing unit does not need 3 tons of air. The coil was mounted on a furnace with a 3 ton blower on high. Original installers replaced 3 TXV's and one compressor in the first year.
I can't take a picture of stupidity for the wall of shame.

I work MOSTLY with straight cooling, not HP.

NO! Its a generic R22 piston.
Usually for the largest size condensor that is a match for that coil.
Piston size is determined by OD unit size and SEER and refrigerant type.
Goodman has always supplied a piston chart with most replacement coils.

Most of what I work on is straight cooling.
I still have found that the chart shows the piston on the evap SOMETIMES, and SOMETIMES the one on the condenser.
AGAIN there is USUALLY only 1 number difference....

I usually find them more than one size off myself.
You may want to get in the habit of using the one off the condensor.
Its the right way to do it.
