^^ in other words the contractor wasnt going to pull a permit which believe it or not is very common, at least in my area. Itd be different if the municipality actually checked the work but in my area all they want is their $$ and they swing by and sign the permit and look at nothing. Every municipality is different though and each inspector is different as well.

A Permit only adds cost to the job, it does not add quality to the work. I know some guys will add 4 hours or more of labor to the job, that will cover the wait time for the inspector, then they will add in anywhere from a few hundred dollars, to several hundred extra just to get the permit.

Guys do things like, keep all items in customers garage with the garage door closed, or around back so if a code inspector drives by all they know it it’s a service call.

Here in GA, the only thing that happens to a hvac contractor that does residential work without a permit gets $50.00 fine.

Instead of worrying about a permit, I would worry more about things like: workers compensation, insurance in case they burn your house down or damage your home in anyway, and the big one, recommendations.

If its a legal requirement, in your area, then don't use a contractor that does not pull one. Legal is legal. If they don't feel like doing something legal, then they won't care about doing things right.

Also, maybe you should consider changing you signature to:It's not the Brand with the fewest repairs-It's all in the install by permit!!! Attention to detail and using the best materials, and passing inspections the first time, all the time!
