    Tower water temps

Looking for a little chiller help... I have a Carrier 30HR050-B150 with water IN from the tower at 110 degrees and leaving the chiller at 122 degrees. The outside temp was 98 yesterday. How much of a delta should I expect to see? The water leaving the chiller was only 52 degrees.

Why was your tower water so hot should be about 85 or so?

I'm thinking something is restricting water flow or a weak pump, I really have no way of determining GPM

Your delta T is not too bad could be alittle better but your condenser water loop is not transfering much heat from what I can tell.

Whow! Tower loop is way way way too hot. You need to confirm the tower and tower fan are in good working order before you do anything else. Then check your pumps, pull strainers, check circuit setters, and lastly condenser barrel water pressure controls if you have them.

I suspect you either have flow issues or your tower fan is not working.

is the water treatment best left to a 3rd party to maintain?

Yes it would in my opinion. Does there appear to be a sufficient flow in the tower ?

not really. is there a method for measuring GPM w/o a flow meter?

You need the PD across the heatexchanger. Then you will have to know the performance curve for that model chiller .At least that is how I do it other people may have a better way of doing it.
Ifyou shoot me a M# I will try to find something on it.

What kind of tower do you have? Is water going over the top of the tower? Or maybe running through a bypass? Hot deck plugged up? 110*h20 pretty darn hot. Not to sound like an a$$ but is the fan going the right direction?

"Lots of algae" will cause the tower not to make capacity. Based on rule of thumb, your condenser delta T looks good (should go down when problem is corrected) assuming you're at full load, but you're not removing the heat from the cooling water. Your tower ain't makin' capacity......

It sounds like you might have a bypass somewhere in the piping. Can you check the suction and discharge of the pump and look up the curve? I would also want to know what pressure drop is reguired across the barrel.

I'd start with cleaning the strainers at the pump and in the tower.

You should be able to get within 6-8 degrees of wet bulb.

Maybe there's a tower by pass for minimum temp, and it's not modulating.

Might also want to check if tower has modulating dampner on fan..is it open?

GPM2 equals GPM1 times square root (deltaP2 divided by deltaP1)

    gpm1 equals design
    gpm2 equals actual
delta p1 equals design pressure drop
delta p2 equals actual pressure drop

don't forget to also check the spray heads and trees for blockage. and if you're growing algae, you may have other bacteria thriving - i.e. legionella - be careful!!!!!!!!!!

lol, funny you mentioned that. it was one of the things I checked when I looked at the tower.

what is the brand of tower and model...your looping tower return water with towering entering to the chiller someplace.the tower will only do its 10F as you have typically.
