    Core tool help

Need help on any ideas with a Rheem heatpump shearer core leaking. Valve core tool is too long and hits the suction line when trying to pull core out. Don't want to loose system pressure. Do they make any stubby versions of the vcrt?

Can you pump the system down and change the core?

suction this time of year, just run it in cooling your suction pressure can't be more than 40#'s so with it running pull out the valve core, plug hole with one finger while getting new valve core ready and then install it. I did it this way for years before I found the valve core tool. Liquid line was a lot harder back then we were running high 200 to mid 300# pressures and some valves were not reusable (open only) plus being liquid it burnt. what you did then was turn off system and let pressures equalize, then change out valve core.

If this is on the line set access valves, can you unscrew one or the other assembly's from the unit (both if necessary) to gain adequate clearance?

I have had the same problem with the VCRT on rheem units. What I did was unscrewed the service valves from the cabinet and carefully lift them up and out so I can get my VCRT on the schrader

I second the brass cap suggestion. Sometimes, it's the only immediate solution without getting into a load of other work.

If its easy to change use your core tool. If not a brass cap is a good solution. I recommend to the customer that it be replaced, but not all go fot it.
I have recently started marking the troublesome caps with a paint marker.
This also serves as a good reminder to wear gloves when taking caps off and hooking up gauges.

If it's a rheem classic then the only way I know is to pump the system down and then replace it with a short schrader core remover. One of the few features I don't like about the rheem Classic.

I have to think that a copper flare gasket would work better.

A flare nut with a bonnet works for me. Everyone finds their own way to the end.

X2 on above, you cannot add a 90 deg access fitting on there? I do that all the time instead of pumping it down, just put on a add fitting with new core.make life simple. Then when and if you have to do major repairs deal with it then.
