They started switching over in the mid eighties. About ten years ago we went on vacation in Canada. To Montreal, then over to Toronto and crossed the border at Niagra Falls. The US border guard asked if we had anything to claim, any food stuff. Replied some souveniers, t-shirts, and some coca cola. They waved me on thru. I can now claim I smuggled in a half pallet of Coke If you go to a Jewish grocery around Passover you may be able to get the "sugar" Cokes, they have Yellow caps. Mexican groceries have them too, but they hide them in the back and will only sell to known customers.

I get them from a small family owned Grocery store in Winona, (about 45 min from here), and Winona Coca Cola makes the Coke in the real glass bottle, and use the real sugar in it.

I buy four 8-packs when I go down, and have to pay for the bottles like back in the old days of glass bottled pop.

I did a night time gig for a few years as a bartender. Happened on a whim really, I was divorced and hanging out at a bar and made a few friends there. I worked hard at it and bought a Rolodex and put drink mixes in there and developed me a group ( Harem) of very nice looking clients. I even bought a ships brass bell and when someone tipped me with anything over a 5 spot I'd rig it. So anywho, Long island ice teas and walk me downs were the rage back then. Also shooters were the happening thing. I guess I'll always love my rum drinks the best. Good ole rum runners, rum and coke are long time favorites

And the government made stevia illegal in the early 90's and ruined the taste of Vernor's ginger ale too. It's legal for you to grow, eat and sell as an herbal suppliment, but you better not put it in food. Thank you corn lobbyists!

You can buy Thums Up! (really it is spelled wrong on the bottle) from your local Indian (dots not feathers) grocery store. It's made by Coca-Cola and has the good stuff in it too. It's actually pretty good too.

    Give me a dope

My grandfather would say that when he wanted a Coke. Any truth that it did have the real thing in it many years ago ?

This is from memory Scott, so bear with me.

According to the reference cited below, which is one of the
most widely used college-level textbooks in substance use and abuse,
the basic facts seem to be that Coca-Cola was formulated in 1886 in
Atlanta by Dr. J.C. Pemberton as a tonic, containing caramel, fruit
flavoring, phosphoric acid, caffeine, and "a secret mixture called
Merchandise No. 5," a mixture "containing the tonic properties of the
wonderful coca plant and the famous cola nut." (first quote from the text,
second from an early ad for Coke). The book goes on to say that "In 1903
the company admitted that there were small amounts of cocaine in its
beverage, but soon after that they quietly removed it all; a
government analysis of Coca-Cola in 1906 did not find any." The
company eventually had to reveal the composition of Merchandise No. 5
to the federal government for its approval, a long, long, time before
    the FDA came into existence.

Apparently Coke is still flavored with extracts from coca leaves,
but with the cocaine removed, to this day. The book says that
a pharmaceutical company in NJ does the removal and ships the
    decocainized leaves to Atlanta.

I bought six Pepsi throwback from Safeway today. Made with natural sugar, got say they are pretty good. They are supposed to be out for a limited time, maybe if they get enough sales they'll be out permantly.
