should I unplug a dead gas water heater?
I have a dead gas water heater that likely has a dead valve. Had it checked out quickly by a qualified technician but he couldn't do anything with it because it turned out to be a rental with a different company than I thought it was with, but he did at least say it was probably the valve. Anyway, correct company now called, but they can't get here until tomorrow and in the mean time this thing is constantly running and has been doing so for probably at least 12 hours or more at this point. Should I leave it alone even though it's always running or should I turn the gas off and unplug it? I don't know what's actually running but I assume it's just the exhaust fan and I can hear something click every few seconds presumably as it tries to relight (and occasionally this makes the lights flicker so it's drawing quite the current). If it won't damage it more to leave it like that, then fine, it can stay that way, but I just worry that it's going to wear some other part out. (and it's 6 years old in case anyone is wondering)

What's the temp of your hot water? In any case as a HO IMO I would turn the gas/temp setting off!

Temp is very very low. Luke warm and steadily falling.

I would shut the gas valve off (the one on the gas pipe feeding the heater) to the thing, let it sit for a few minutes, and then find the way to disconnect the power to the unit and completely shut it down. Then leave it all shut off until they get there to look at it. Gas is nothing to mess around with!

She be off, captain. Someone with more sleep than I am currently functioning with told me to go unplug the darn thing and not worry about the gas line because like duh, do I go turn off the gas every time there's a power outage? ;-)
