Water Heater venting
PVC pipe on right is for the 90% furnace. Metal pipe on left is for the water heater. This was done as new construction and somehow passed inspection. Single wall pipe thru the wall, heater is about 4' from the wall so it is a nice, short & hot flue. Homeowner acted suprised when he was told this is improper AND unsafe, didn't seem to care since it "has been like that for years".

Just put a vent cap on it to keep out rain and evil spirits and call it good.
The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....

Most home owners just want it to work and do not care so much for the safty aspect, but how much does it cost.

The problem I see it it was never connected to the gutter downspout. How on earth can you fill the waterheater with that setup?

In central Iowa, that vent pipe is toooooo close to that gas meter and regulator.

Check out the hole for the refrigerant lines.

also looks like a mallable coupling on the gas pipe. those are also illegal her in MD.
same stuff here. homeowners dont care about safety. they just want to know if it works and how much to get it to work.
