I have a honeywell combination control (model VR800A 1012) with an adjustment screw for pilot. This is from a 1986 Airco furnace. Despite attempts at turning the screw clockwise/counter clockwise no difference could be noted in flame height or size. The thermocouple is new and the pilot has been cleaned.

    Any advice would be appreciated..

    Hmm

Whats the reason you are trying to get a larger pilot? Would it be because it occasionally blows out? When was the last time you had the furnace gone over and the heat exchanger checked thoroughly? 1986 furnace? You may have a cracked heat exchanger which is causing the blower to draw air from the heat exchanger snuffing out the pilot.

As for the reason you can't adjust the pilot flame, the rules of this site prevent us from giving out repair information to DIYers. Please read the site rules.

It seems like the newer gas valves from Honeywell, the pilot adjust doesn't have any major adjustment. Especially on the 9501.

The furnace has been serviced approximately 2 months ago. No problems noted. Pilot flame quit and thermocouple replaced with repeat service call (noted that pilot may need to be adjusted further). The flame appearance is a little larger then it should be with more yellow then desired. Contact with thermocouple is good.
So only minor adjustment is desired BUT not able to achieve with adjustment screw.
Does this occur very often with combination controls (that have adjustment)in low efficiency furnaces?

2 months ago... it's time to call them back or call someone else.
