Capacitors
How does one tell the difference in a run capacitor and a start capacitor by their appearance?

They are in different bins in the truck

Also if you fit a start cap where a run cap should go, they explode, often quite spectacularly.

Yeah! learnt this after working on unit customer had tried to fix themselves, ran it up to see what it was doing (they reported it tripping overloads), thing ran ok then sounded like it was siezing up as the comp laboured and cap over heated, then all this smoke came out the electrics box, found a tiny start cap where two run caps should have been.
Customer claimed no one had worked on it since last time we were there
