It has a slight film of oil around compressor term housing but i was like ... how would it get all over the outside of the housing ??

Because the compressor terminals are leaking. Not very common. More common on semi hermetics than tin cans, but I have seen it on hermetics. Have you ever come across a pump with the terminals blown out? Normally caused by plugged condensers.

I would suspect the Evap. But couldn't agree more add Dye and worry about it next time. Customer will appreciate that your in and out and there is a very good chance you will fix it next time
