Thermostat settings (gas vs. electric, heat pump vs. multi stage)

I just moved into a house which has a Ruud Silhouette II Plus 2 natural-gas furnace and a White-Rodgers 1F85-275 programmable thermostat.

The switch inside the thermostat was set to electric. Do I change it to gas?

The thermostat was set to 'Multi Stage' (as opposed to heat pump). Is this correct?

I have several 'atomic clock' thermometers around the house, one right next to the thermostat, and both are 4-5 degrees (F) below the thermostat. So when I set the thermostat to 70 and the heat turns off (the thermostat showing 70), the thermometer right next to it will show 64-65. Is that normal? How trustworthy is the thermometer reading in the thermostat?

    Thank you very much,
    Mike

Set to gas. You want multistage since you have a 2 stage gas furnace. Hopefully wired right. Usually the built in sensor is right on but if you think it isn't, it can be tweaked 4 either way in the advanced setup.
