opinions from harley people
so it is time for me to get my first harley. a couple of months ago i thought i had the one that i wanted locked down. an 2006 street glide. now that it is time to actually do the deal the guy who has it decided that he wants to keep it. no problem, i understand. so i start looking again. i went to the harley store and looked at new ones. here is my question. looking at the street glides, i also looked at the electra glide classic. now i am by no means an expert, but it seems to me that the street glide is nothing but an electra glide classic with parts taken off and less chrome!! am i missing something? both of these bikes are exactly the same price, and i was planning on getting a touring pack for the street glide anyway. seems like a no brainer to go with the electra glide unless someone can tell me something i'm missing.

While getting a bike is a great escape from our occupation,for some relaxation, why only look at Harley's? It depends on what kind of riding you do, I guess. Local {200miles a day} or touring across country {500 miles a day for a week or two} I ride a Goldwing and it has the smoothest ride and can listen to music to relax. Like I said, depends on what kind of riding you plan on doing. Just keep an open mind and figure out what kind of riding you plan on doing. {Flame Suit on}

Sorry about that .... Let me crawl back out of the gutter.
Ya you guys are right Harley's and Honda's ..... way cheaper then what I was thinking of.

First item... Try to get a 2007 or later model. There's nothing wrong with the earlier models but 07 and up have the narrowband 02 sensors which will make it easier for you to tune the ECM when you do motor modifications such as an open exhaust, cams, air cleaner and a like. The 07 and up are larger CI motors. (96, 103, 110 and the new 120R). The 2009 and up have the new frame which makes the ride and coring ability on the touring bikes a dream. Also the 2009 is first year model with the 2-1-2 exhaust system and the second year model with the DBW (electronic throttle)
Second item... The SG is a lighter bike than the UC. You ride a SG different than the UC when it comes to your sitting position. The UC will make you sit more upright while the SG will create more of a slouch posture. Your best choice would be how your back feels after 50 or more miles. More upright will put more pressure downward on your seat while a slouch posture will extend your arms a bit, allow for more butt positions on the seat, this is also more conducive for the use of hwy pegs and being able to relax.
Third item... There are differences in the SG and UC more so than just the tour pak. Handlebars, seat, rear bag/fender height and front auxiliary lights are the first things that come to mind besides the CB which I never used when I had my UC. You can always make the UC tour pak detachable and you can always purchase a tour pak for the SG.
I've had both but prefer the SG over the UC because I do very little two up riding. There is also nothing wrong with other brands such as a Wing but I have no issues riding long distances and listening to my stereo even though I do have modified exhaust and motor.
What ever you choose, hold on to your wallet because HD's and bling have a tendency to lighten it a lot.
Here is my current ride... the wife rides one just like it, different color.
11-29-2011, 02:18 PM #5thanks for the info dad. i think that the ultra and the electra glide classic are two totally different bikes in 2012. the classic is very close to the sg in weight, only about a 30lb difference, and i attribute that to the touring pack. that is what has me kind of puzzled. looking at the two bikes side by side, they are virtually identical except for the fact that the eg has more chrome, more lights, and a touring pack and the sg does not. they are the same price, down to the penny.
11-29-2011, 02:21 PM #6this is not my first bike, but my first harley. i have always wanted one, and now i can finally afford it!! i know there are lots of nice bikes out there by many different manufactures, but this is what i have wanted for many years!!
i don't think that any one out there makes a bike that looks or sounds as good as a harley.
11-29-2011, 02:37 PM #7I have the electra glide and love it. Another reason to get a later model is the six speed transmission, big difference. I replaced the dual exhaust with a single 2-1 Reinhart, big sucker air filter, race tuner and had it dyno'd. It made a big difference in performance.
And I can listen to the radio too.....it adjusts volume with speed.If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what will never be. (Thomas Jefferson 1816)

11-29-2011, 04:15 PM #9to bad, I just sold my Goldwing. Custom Diamond Big Boy Seat, intercom, CB, Kuryakyn...everything....I added about $2500 in extras
I bought property in the Adirondacks, so the bike is no longer a viable mode of transportation as we need to transport food, water and equipment back and forth.
