    Red face

It's been kinda slow so I thought I'd think of something to post.

While working on this equipment on this fine flat rooftop I had an awesome view to look around.

With all of these RTU's around me I challenged myself to see if I can spot some of the more CUSTOM installations

This was also on the roof with me. Just thought it looked funny but maybe it's standard in other parts of the country

Now to look around at the neighbors RTU's.

    What is that?

Most likely done by the home owner, there is bubble wrap insulation stuck around the case of this fine Goodman Heat Pump...

Got to love the round duct comeing off of the RTU and going down through that flat roof. $10 says there is no insulation in that round duct

And what do we have down there. That's not a flat roof. (I actually LIKE flat roofs).

Nope. It's one of those "life threatening" set ups.
You get to climb up onto that first rooftop which I'm sure is very stable.

Then set yet ANOTHER ladder up against that 2nd story roof top with the drain gutter that I assume is also very stable to lean the ladder up on.
Then climb up there and make sure you don't trip on the condensate drain. Or you're going DOWN!
Also, there is NO room to walk on the sides to access them panels unless of course you walk on the tiles.

Got to LOVE it. Chances are, that passed inspection when the house was new! There's entire housing tracks just like that.

    Depends on the system.

Some of the NEW(ER) stuff is loud. Like Carrier's newer RTU's with the composite base and scroll comps are noisy suckers. By contrast the old 50YQ models built in the 80's could barely be heard. Just goes to show you.

Actually, I like single story RTU jobs. Everything is in one place. Don't have to crawl through attics to change a motor, look for a leak, etc.

It's just the DEATH TRAP roofs that i hate. Like shown above with the two ladder job, or them damn Dietz Crane built homes. Them home builders should be BANNED from designing or building homes!

I'm slowly getting used to seeing RTU's on houses, but only in pictures. Honestly I don't think I've ever seen a RTU in a residential place in my area, nor a package unit either.

Hopefully it stays that way too!

swamp fox , it is always said that when goettl air conditioning started back in the 30's or so they used to remove evap coolers off houses, add a return and reuse the existing supply, they made a killing doing this, the coolers where always out on the roof for proper operation,, it just seems these package units are all over but the builders are using splits more and more.. these are great situations when you have a change-out- the crane does all the work for ya...

aaah... now THAT explains why we see RTU's on residential out there. 'though I don't understand why architects would intentionally design a new house with an RTU other than being an idiot.

yep that's Phoenix, I can testify to that.

Actually lately I have been doing a lot of installs, so they look pretty and there are so few pictures to take anymore.

But that's definitely Phoenix. The land that inspectors forgot.

I zoomed in with the dig cam. It's DIGITAL zoom on that model not OPTICAL so you loose quality taking pix in the distance. But hey. $100 and been dropped more times than I can count and it still works??????? Yeah it's a good camera I think

At least I didn't use my Camera Phone that time.
