Hey guy., check out this question!!!
Looking at a project, project includes change butterfly Nd new pump,
Instead of draining building, I heard of a practice that freezes the pipe for a few hours to be able to change valves., awesome .

Cold Shot Pipe Freeze kits... http://www.pipemanproducts.com/Coldshot.html
Pretty neat when you have a property with a common boiler for hot water.
But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.---Psalm 50:16-17

Ive used them on municipal water line and they work great. The one I used was CO2 and as long as the water insnt moving its fine.

The bang when the plug thaws and slaps down the pipe to the first bend always make me nervous. And like stickinit said the water cant be moving, if you are to close to a tee with water moving on the other line it can give you a fit.

A pipe freeze works great.... as long as you know what you're doing.
There is a mechanical contractor down here in Miami that specializes in pipe freezes. He uses liquid nitrogen pumped through a jacket wrapped around the pipe. Pretty awesome.
Find someone in your area with experience doing this.

stupid question:
I am assuming that you won't be able to perform pipe freeze operations on water systems since water expands which would crack the pipe?

i am working on a 4 and 6 inch pipe., they want to change the butterfly valve
on the discharge side of the pump.,
sanman, if u THINK about it., if u have a closed loop with no play, yes the pipe would bust,
however , if u freeze a small section of a pipe, the water will freeze then expand, but only freeze that section, .,
i was thinking about this product

We have a "cold shot" by general I think. We've used it on a few jobs. It's worked well. We freeze two spots, one on either side of the repair we're doing and then drill a test hole to make sure it's plugged.
It only works on water that isn't moving and our kit only goes up to 3" pipe. The one time we used it on 3", it took 45 minutes to freeze completely and we had a spare bottle of CO2 on hand just in case we ran out.
After we freeze the pipe, and drill the test hole, we work like maniacs to get two valves installed for fear that the ice plug might fail...it hasn't yet.Ryan
