what make and model fireplace do you have?
Hi all,
My homes original fire grate has deformed and I'm looking to replace it. This is in a builder grade insert.
Have you heard of or you yourself used the Grate Wall of Fire fire grate?
Its a vertically stacked grate that you just load from above and the fire then is more vertical. Then the radiant face is larger. Supposedly it doesn't require stoking or reorganizing because the fire just settles lower and lower. Then you load from above.
Take a look http://www.gratewalloffire.com/Techn...n_ep_40-1.html
I'm really curious. Anyone see drawbacks?

Keep the fire inside the fireplace.
I've never found a label on it.
Think cheap looking with brass glass doors in house built in 1992.
IMO, as a fellow wood burner:
You will have to stoke the fire much more often. There is ALOT less space to put wood. Not good, if you burn a fire alot.
Secondly. I bet there is problems with warpage of the material. Maybe not, but it looks to me like their will be.
Third, it will be hard on the bricks, if you lay hot coals against them. They will likely crack, chip, and fall apart much sooner. The heating and cooling will wreck them in a few years.
Do you burn wood just for the ambience or do you burn it to heat a space?
Personally, I burn wood for home heat. I built my own forced air OWB.
If it is a factory built fireplace then the point is moot .You should NOT use a grate other than the mfrs. OEM grate. These fireplaces were tested and listed with a specific grate attached at the rear. You put this thing in there and the heat signature changes drastically. You could easily over heat the framing around the fireplace or project more radiant heat onto the hearth extension and set the floor on fire.
Fireplaces are for fun and aesthetics but not heat. IF you need heat, replace it with a hybrid fireplace/ stove.
Be safe
Keep the fire inside the fireplace.
Thank you both.
Yes. I too was worried about the effect on the back brick which is a faux brick solid concrete slab insert.
I am just using it for ambiance and don't need to risk it. Especially with the fireplace just being built in regular framing.
Thanks guys!
