I would check with your local vocational school and find out if they hold prep courses for a boiler license. I know that bergan county tedh holds courses. Then register to take the test.

Getting a boiler operator license in New Jersey is a catch-22. You need experience before you can take the test but need a license to be an operating engineer. If you have documented boiler operator experience I would recommend taking a course at your local vo-tech before applying to take the test.

Can you also look up your local chapter of the NAPE? They can surely point you in the right direction. I studied through the NAPE for my 3rd Grade Engineer License.
And in general, Woodruff and Lammers edition of Steam Plant Operation is a long winded but good start.
