Cold Start Boiler

Here is a question I have.

I have a WM Ultra 230. On average, it takes about 5 minutes to reach the set point for the water temp from a cold start. I am just trying to figure out if that is normal or too long?

What are you using this for?

Both space heating and DHW. Unit feeds a coil in a variable speed air handlder. DHW is a ultra plus 60.

What are your settings and what is the outside temperature. Five min at this point does not sound bad?

Ranges are as follows: 70 degree ODT = 140 degree water, 20 degree ODT = 180 degree water. Usuallay the cold start is around 110 degrees and takes about 4-5 minutes to get to 156 degrees.

More then ten degrees a min I would think that is good

11.5 degrees per minute or 9.2 degrees per minute sounds ok from what you have said 46 degrees 4-5 min sounds reasonable even nice from a cold idling start up.

For heat, it sounds alittle over sized. But that could be low flow through the hydro coil, or you have your cfm set low.

The 230 can modulate down to 46,000btu input. And hydro's don't hold alot of water, so you get a quick temp rise.

If the temp rises too fast, the Ultra will lock out and give you a code 30.

Have not had that problem. I lowered the blower speed on the ultra and changed the off differential to 16 degrees, this stopped all short cycling of the boiler and it runs like a charm know. The boiler will stay fired and not short cycle for an entire heat call how ever long it may be.

Yes, that is where I learned to make all of the adjustments.

You know that setting that says don't set below 140.

Set it to 130, as long as you don't change the other setting, your DHW won't lag.

I have some as low as 120, on 40 gal indirects.


PS: If you have 0011 circs, and they fail under warranty, ask your installer about switching to 0014 circs under warranty.

I set it to 130 that way I could set the off diferential 10 16 degrees on the DHW as well to avoid short cycling. I works great as well.

Sorry for the confusion, I have had it set that way for about a month now and there is absolutelt no difference to me....

I haven't had any complaints about it from anyone yet. Some as long as four years.

If you haven't had any trouble in a month, its doutbfull you will, unless your hot water usage would go way up, or you inlet water temp drops to 30.

Why the change from a 0011 to a 0014?

Apparently they have been having trouble with the 0011 some times.

All 155, 230, and 310'come with 0014's now.
With a note, where ever the manual recommends a 0011, use a 0014 instead. This includes indirects hooked to Ultra's.
