Hot and cold rooms in the winter...

This is a general question. I just want to get a leg up on it before I call the HVAC company.


The house-
Six years old we just bought it. Two story. Two heat pumps. Flexi duct.

Situation-
Upstairs
Daughters upstairs room is very cold
Sons adjoining room is way too hot
not sure about the other bedrooms

Downstairs
Master bedroom cold
Master bathroom cold
other rooms adequate


I closed my sons vent off to see if that would help with daughters room.

I don't know how the previous owners tolerated this. I would assume that in the summer the reverse will be too hot and too cold?

Any thoughts off the top of your head?

are there dampers on each run? are they open? do you have electric strips ? are they coming on?
are your filters clean? what it temp diff across coil?

Try to have system ,Balanced. If no ! Have reputable contractor install , hand dampers and proceed from there.

Are both rooms with same exposure, i.e. North, East, etc...
Does house have an attic. Ceiling insulation over both bedrooms the same? any obvious air leaks around windows?
Does airflow from registers appear to be the same? Is air coming out of registers at same temperature in both rooms (I use alcohol soil thermometers with metal jacket to measure register temps in my house. They cost less than 10 bucks)?
I presume doors to both rooms are kept closed. Are there return air registers in both rooms? Or are the gaps at bottom of doors in both rooms for return air the same?

You can also get a rough idea of register airflow using a bag test, i.e. time it takes to fill a garbage bag placed over register.

One possible noisy solution: install a through the wall fan to increase flow to cold room (assuming rooms are share a common wall).

These are some of the things you can do before you call the professionals.
